Growing up in Fort Worth, Texas I remember always being interested in the outdoors. Through mud puddles and tree houses I found a connection to the environment at an early age. I didn’t realize it at the time, but my desire to be creative would someday be realized through a simple book. Thumbing through various books on architecture while visiting a friend at the university of Arkansas I came across one titled, “Dan Kiley: The Complete Works of America’s Master Landscape Architect.” Little did I know, but that simple book would change my life and inspire me to become a Landscape Architect. Kiley in his wisdom, personified an ideal I had been searching for. He blended the act of usefulness and utility unlike any before his time. I was immediately hooked. My career path was later emboldened by architectural studies in Italy, France, and England.
Looking back now I am confident that my education, supplemented with ideas from various greats like Kiley, provided me a direct link to the foundations of the practice, design, and philosophy of the American Landscape Architectural tradition. I am happy to say that the mud puddles have transformed into curvilinear parks, tree houses have evolved into gazebos and after many years in practice my passion is still the same. Each day holds new possibilities and with them I am confident of Kiley’s ideal for a more appropriate use of the landscape. |
